Le souffle

(...) Brecht Koelman, on le sait, – à la manière des dates paintings d’On Kawara – se contente de titrer ses peintures par la date du jour de leur réalisation, établissant ainsi un calendrier plus atmosphèrique que saisonnier, perception immédiate d’un espace et d’un temps donné, vécue dans une environnement spécifique. Sa peinture résulte des forces qui conjuguent la couleur, le rythme des formes, l’air qui circulent entre toutes ces choses qui constituent un paysage, l’air comme un vide, l’air comme un mouvement, l’air considèré pour lui-même. Ainsi touche-t-il –et cela n’a rien de paradoxal – à une logique intemporelle, celle d’un souffle suspendu. Ce processus ne pouvait que se cristalliser en ces temps pandémiques et cette inédite expérience du confinement. Pour ce Circuit Court, l’artiste a donc voulu très logiquement organiser la monstration de ses peintures au fil des semaines confinées passées dans son jardin. L’art au temps du corona, cet axiome repris ces derniers mois par tant de média paraphrasant le célèbre roman de Gabriel García Márquez ne fait, hic et nunc, que renforcer un processus vécu. Brecht Koelman parle ainsi de ses « peintures corona », toutes élaborées dans son jardin. « Durant toute la quarantaine, le temps fut exceptionnellement agréable, ce qui m’a permis de travailler à̀ l’extérieur de façon permanente, explique-t-il. J’ai peint essentiellement au jardin car je ne pouvais pas le quitter, et ce faisant, je constatais la sécheresse grandissante de la végétation ».

Brecht Koelman est philosophe de formation. Du jardin au Jardin, il n’y a qu’un pas, le Jardin d’Epicure, cette école philosophique ouverte aux hommes et aux femmes en 306 avant notre ère où Epicure enseigne les moyens de parvenir à l’ataraxie, cette paix de l’âme, cette tranquillité résultant de la modération et de l’harmonie de l’existence, principe même du bonheur. « L’idée d’un jardin enclos est récurrente dans mon travail, explique-t-il. Je peins souvent dans mon jardin, j’ai eu l’occasion de résider dans des endroits isolés comme Isola Comacina en Italie ou Vélez Blanco en Andalousie. J'ai aimé entretenir le jardin du monastère de Westmalle et j'ai envisagé d'y entrer ». L’idée même du confinement évoque ici le jardin enclos médiéval, l’Hortus Conclusus, thème iconographique et littéraire de l’art religieux européen, principalement dans les domaines de la poésie mystique et de la représentation mariale. « Ma sœur et fiancée est un jardin enclos ; le jardin enclos est une source fermée », lit-on dans le Cantique des Cantiques. « Le cosmos se reflète dans ce jardin, poursuit Brecht Koelman, comme dans les jardins orientaux. Je sens que mon travail est la résonance des forces en interaction que je perçois dans le paysage. Et cela présente de fortes similitudes avec le concept du ch'i dans le taoïsme, important pour de nombreux peintres tels que Zhu Da (Bada Shanren). Le coup de pinceau est donc une réponse directe, une traduction de ce qui est observé, comme le peintres chinois traduit le ch’i du paysage en ch’i du dessin Ce concept de ch'i est similaire à celui du rouach, littéralement le souffle, qui se réfère, entre autres, à l'esprit de Dieu se promenant dans le jardin d'Eden dans la fraîcheur du jour, the cool of the day » (Genèse 3: 8). Tiens, The cool of the day, n’était-ce pas le titre de la précédente exposition de Brecht Koelman à la galerie ? Un souffle, une respiration.

Brecht Koelman volstaat ermee om, zoals we weten, - op de manier van On Kawara's datumschilderijen – zijn schilderijen te betitelen met de datum van de dag waarop ze zijn gemaakt, waardoor een kalender wordt gecreëerd die eerder atmosferisch dan seizoensgebonden is, een onmiddellijke waarneming van een gegeven ruimte en tijd, beleefd in een specifieke omgeving. Zijn schilderkunst is het resultaat van de krachten die zich bundelen in kleur, het ritme van vormen, de lucht die beweegt tussen al wat een landschap vormt, de lucht als een leegte, de lucht als beweging, de lucht op zichzelf beschouwd. Op die manier stoot hij - en dat heeft niets paradoxaals – op een tijdloze logica, die van een ingehouden adem. Een dergelijk proces kon niet anders dan zich uitkristalliseren in deze pandemische tijden en deze ongekende ervaring van opsluiting. Voor deze Circuit Court heeft de kunstenaar er daarom volkomen logisch voor gekozen om zijn schilderijen te organiseren aan de hand van de weken die hij afgezonderd in zijn tuin heeft door gebracht. Kunst in tijden van corona, dit axioma dat de afgelopen maanden is herhaald door zovele media, daarbij de beroemde roman van Gabriel García Márquez parafraserend, versterkt dus, hic et nunc, alleen maar een beproefd proces. Zo spreekt Brecht Koelman over zijn 'corona-schilderijen', alle gemaakt in zijn tuin. " Het was uitzonderlijk mooi weer tijdens de hele quarantaine, waardoor ik permanent buiten kon werken”, legt hij uit. “Ik schilderde voornamelijk in de tuin omdat ik die niet kon verlaten en merkte daarbij een toenemende verdorring van de gewassen op."

Brecht Koelman is filosoof van opleiding. Van de tuin naar de Tuin is het slechts een stap, de Tuin van Epicurus, deze filosofische school die in 306 vC voor zowel mannen als vrouwen werd geopend, waar Epicurus de manier onderwees om ataraxia te bereiken, deze zielsrust, die voortkomt uit matiging en harmonie in het bestaan, als grondslag voor geluk. “Het idee van een besloten tuin is een terugkerend thema in mijn werk”, legt hij uit. “Ik schilder vaak in mijn eigen tuin en deed residenties op afgezonderde plaatsen, zoals Isola Comacina of Vélez Blanco. Ik hield er van om de kloostertuin in Westmalle te onderhouden en overwoog om er in te treden.” Het idee van opsluiting en afzondering roept hier de middeleeuwse besloten tuin op, de Hortus Conclusus, een iconografisch en literair thema in de Europese religieuze kunst, voornamelijk op het gebied van mystieke poëzie en Mariavoorstelling. “Mijn zuster, o bruid! gij zijt een besloten hof, een besloten wel, een verzegelde fontein.”, lezen we in het Hooglied. “De kosmos werd weerspiegeld in deze tuin”, vervolgt Brecht Koelman, “zoals ook in de oosterse tuinen. Ik heb het idee dat mijn werk de resonantie is van op elkaar inwerkende krachten die ik in het landschap zie. Dit is iets dat sterke overeenkomsten heeft met het begrip van ch'i in het taoïsme, belangrijk voor veel Chinese inktschilders zoals Zhu Da (Bada Shanren). De penseelstreek is daarom een direct antwoord, een vertaling van wat is geobserveerd, zoals de Chinese schilders de ch’i van het landschap vertalen in de ch'i van de tekening. Dit concept van ch'i is vergelijkbaar met dat van Rouach, letterlijk de adem, wat onder meer verwijst naar de geest van God die door de tuin van Eden wandelt in de de koelte van de dag, the cool of the day” (Genesis 3: 8). Tiens, The cool of the day, was dat niet de titel van de vorige tentoonstelling van Brecht Koelman in de galerie? Een adem, een ademtocht.

The breath

Brecht Koelman suffices, as we know, - in the manner of On Kawara's date paintings - to label his paintings with the date of the day they were created, thus creating a calendar that is atmospheric rather than seasonal , an immediate perception of a given space and time, experienced in a specific environment. His painting is the result of the forces that bundle themselves in color, the rhythm of forms, the air moving between everything that forms a landscape, the air as a void, the air as movement, the air in itself. In this way he encounters - and there’s nothing paradoxical about it - a timeless logic, that of a breath suspended. Such a process could not but crystallize in these pandemic times and this unprecedented experience of incarceration. For this Circuit Court, the artist has therefore logically chosen to organize his paintings on the basis of the weeks he spent in his garden in isolation. Art in the time of corona, this axiom that has been repeated by so many media in recent months, paraphrasing the famous novel by Gabriel García Márquez, does nothing but reinforce, hic et nunc, a tried and tested process. Thus Brecht Koelman speaks of his 'corona paintings', all made in his garden. "The weather was exceptionally nice throughout the quarantine, which allowed me to work outside permanently," he explains. "I painted mainly in the garden because I couldn't leave it, noticing an increasing withering of the vegetation."

Brecht Koelman is educated as a philosopher. It is only one step from the garden to the Garden, the Garden of Epicurus, this philosophical school that opened to both men and women in 306 BC, where Epicurus taught the way to attain ataraxia, this peace of mind that stems from moderation and harmony in existence, as a foundation for happiness. "The idea of a private garden is a recurring theme in my work," he explains. “I often paint in my own garden and did residences in isolated places, such as Isola Comacina or Vélez Blanco. I liked to maintain the monastery garden in Westmalle and considered entering it. ” The idea of confinement and seclusion here evokes the medieval enclosed garden, the Hortus Conclusus, an iconographic and literary theme in European religious art, mainly in the fields of mystical poetry and Marian representation. " A garden inclosed is my sister, my spouse; a spring shut up, a fountain sealed”, we read in the Song of Songs. “The cosmos was reflected in this garden,” continues Brecht Koelman, “as in the oriental gardens. I feel that my work is the resonance of interacting forces that I see in the landscape. This is something that has strong similarities to the concept of ch'i in Taoism, important to many Chinese ink painters such as Zhu Da (Bada Shanren). The brushstroke is therefore a direct answer, a translation of what has been observed, like the Chinese painters translate the ch'i of the landscape into the ch'i of the drawing. This concept of ch'i is similar to that of Rouach, literally the breath, which refers, among other things, to the spirit of God walking through the garden of Eden in the cool of the day ”(Genesis 3 : 8). Terwijl ik naar die tuin kijk, verbaas ik mij erover dat er van het stedenbouwkundige, politieke, sociologische of antropologische aspect van deze tuin niets in de schilderijen van Koelman opduikt en dat is de grote kwaliteit ervan. Zijn schilderijen zijn geen kneuterige weergave van het eigen lapje grond door een zondagsschilder per vergissing voor schilderkunst aanzien, noch vormen ze het decoratieve sluitstuk van de landelijke stijl die in Belgisch Vlaanderen zo populair is en waarvan de aankleding en aanleg van de tuin toch ook laat zien, hoe het bakstenen huis nog in de fermette-sfeer lijkt thuis te horen, maar in zijn latere decoratieve toevoegingen al naar de pastorijwoning stijl is opgeschoven. Dat alles laat Koelman in zijn kleine landschapsschilderijen volstrekt links liggen wanneer hij in die tuin zijn ezel opstelt en schilderijen weet te maken die als kleine enigma’s werken. Hij weet van die tuin kamers in een hoofd te maken, gedachten en gemoedsstemmingen die met verf op doek zijn uitgedrukt. De schilder weet wat hij doet en hij weet dat schilderen een andere manier van denken is. Een vorm van kennis over de dingen van het leven die ouder en fundamenteler is dan het positivistische idee van kennis dat vandaag de wereld domineert.

“The garden is typical for most of allotment-Flanders: a short-mown lawn, a few neatly cut hedges, a tree older than the garden itself and small buildings that are used as sheds. While I look at this garden I am surprised by the fact that none of the urban, political, sociological or anthropological aspects of this garden are present in Koelman’s paintings, and that is their great quality. His paintings are neither petty-bourgeois representations of one’s own piece of land, mistaken for art by the sunday-painter, nor are they the decorative concluding piece of a country-style so popular in Flanders, that shows in its furnishing of the garden how the brickstone house seems to belong to the fermette-style, but, in its decorative additions has evolved towards a rectory cottage. All of this Koelman leaves aside in his small landscape-paintings when he sets up his easel in this garden and makes paintings that work like small enigmas. He knows how to create mental rooms of this garden, thoughts and moods made with paint on canvas. The painter knows what he does and he knows that painting is a different way of thinking. A kind of knowledge which is older and more fundamental than the positivistic approach that rules the world nowadays.”
